Groundwater Management Area 6 (GMA 6) covers all or parts of thirty-one counties in north central Texas. There are five groundwater conservation districts in GMA 6.
About GMA6
The area varies widely from east to west. The eastern parts of the area are mainly served by surface water, are more populous. Groundwater supplies in the eastern portion of GMA 6 are fairly limited. The western parts of the area are mainly served by groundwater, are more rural, and depend on groundwater for their water supplies. A unique factor in GMA 6 is that the three aquifers are internally discontinuous. That is to say, each of the aquifers contains water that is not well connected to other parts of that same aquifer. The Seymour Aquifer, the only major aquifer within GMA 6 and from which the GMA boundary is derived, has geographically isolated pods of sand and gravel. The Blaine Aquifer has discontinuous solution cavities and channels. The Cross Timbers Aquifer is typically discontinuous with water being present in sandstone and fractured limestone which are separated by thick shale layers. This allows smaller areas of each aquifer to be produced and managed independently without effect on the neighboring producers.
